A photograph of a passenger in Mexico who bears a resemblance to Michael Jackson has sparked a wave of reactions online, with some social-media users jokingly asking whether the legendary performer could somehow still be alive.
The image appears to show an older man sitting on a bus, and his facial features and overall appearance reminded some viewers of the late King of Pop. After the photograph was shared online, comments quickly began appearing from people surprised by the resemblance.
Some users took the joke even further, asking, “What if Michael Jackson never died?”
The photograph may be entertaining, but there is no reliable evidence that the man pictured is Michael Jackson or that the singer secretly disappeared.
Michael Jackson died in Los Angeles on June 25, 2009. His death was investigated by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, which is responsible for investigating sudden and unusual deaths in the county and determining their circumstances and cause.
The resemblance has therefore become more of an internet curiosity than a genuine mystery.
Look-alike stories involving famous celebrities are nothing new. Familiar facial features, hairstyles and expressions can sometimes make a stranger appear remarkably similar to a well-known person, particularly in a photograph taken from a particular angle.
Social media has made celebrity look-alikes an easy source of conversation. A single photograph can be shared thousands of times, with each person adding their own reaction or theory.
In this case, the comparison to Michael Jackson appears to have been enough to capture people’s attention and encourage playful speculation.
The story also highlights how easily an amusing social-media post can become separated from its original context. Once an image begins circulating, viewers may not know who originally took it, when it was captured or whether the accompanying claims are accurate.
For fans of Michael Jackson, the photograph may bring back memories of one of the most recognizable entertainers in music history. But despite the online jokes and speculation, the available official record does not support the idea that Jackson survived his 2009 death.
Sometimes, a remarkable resemblance is simply that—a remarkable resemblance.
