Classic choices such as John, Mary, William, and Elizabeth are becoming less common as more parents embrace creativity and individuality when naming their children.
The days of several students sharing the same name in a classroom are fading fast.
Instead, many parents are looking for names that feel distinctive and memorable, helping their child stand out from the crowd.
For one mom, that desire for originality sparked a heated debate online and prompted her to defend her decision.
Influencer sparks debate over unusual baby name choice
Indy Clinton, an Australian fitness and lifestyle influencer, has built a large online audience thanks to her candid approach to motherhood and family life.
When she first learned she was expecting her second child, Clinton had planned to use the name Paloma. However, she eventually changed her mind and chose something completely different.
The decision quickly divided her followers.
While many praised the name, others argued it could cause problems for the child later in life and even lead to teasing.
“Imagine being an adult named this. These baby names are mad these days,” one person said.
Sarcastically, a second commented: “Are you naming humans that will be adults one day? Or kittens?”
“Definitely bring up the fact that kids are cruel. A unique name isn’t something to shy away from but a unique name that is indelibly tied to a character may not be desirable to your kid,” a third person replied.
“Now imagine being in middle school with a Disney name.”
Not everyone was critical, though.
Defending the choice, one supporter wrote: “People need to shut it. She can name her baby anything she wants. I think it’s adorable.”
Another agreed, adding: “Congratulations! It’s a wonderful name for your baby.”
A third follower simply commented: “So happy, love the name.”
